How does commissioning work?
I believe transparency is the key to a successful art commission. You are spending your hard-earned money, and I want to deliver a work of art that you love, in a timeframe and budget that works for you. See the FAQs below for complete details.
Please reach out to me if you have any questions!
FAQ’s
-
My drawings and paintings are done free-hand (i.e. no digital techniques) from the reference photo. This is a refined skill that takes decades to develop and is slow to produce the finished work.
I draw in graphite and charcoal; for pet portraits there is the additional option of colored pencil. I paint in oil on canvas or archival panels, building the painting up in several layers done over several sessions.
-
My preference is always to take my own reference photos. Taking my own photos not only ensures I'll have the necessary clarity and lighting, but also that the poses will be flattering and the contrasts between light and dark will be strong. After photographing your loved one/s, we can review the photos together and choose which will work best for the primary reference.
-
The size is up to you! Pricing is based on the medium (drawing or painting), the number of subjects (single-subject or group), and the size of the portrait. See Price List below.
-
I am happy to communicate however you are most comfortable: text, email, phone, or direct message on Facebook or Instagram. You can contact me initially through my contact page, but after that, it is up to you. If you would like to kick things off with an in-person meeting or video call, that is wonderful for me.
-
I work on a first come first serve basis. Once I receive your 50% deposit, you are placed into my schedule. I will let you know the lead time in advance of payment. (Single-subject drawings generally take 1 week to complete. A single-subject painting can take up to 1 month to complete).
If you need the portrait done sooner than the lead time allowed by my schedule, let me know, and I will see if I can accommodate you sooner. I can’t perform miracles, but I can shift things around.
-
I generally show clients my initial sketch before detailed work begins. I also provide a progress shot once the work is 90% complete, so that you have the opportunity to request revisions before the piece is finalized.
-
I ask for a 50% deposit to begin the project. This helps me reserve your spot in my schedule. Once we have agreed on composition, size and price, I will send you an invoice through PayPal or request through Venmo. The balance is due upon your approval of the finished portrait.
If I am unable to deliver for any reason, I will provide a full refund.
-
Local delivery (Memphis area), free of charge.
Shipping in the U.S. – pricing will be included in the invoice for your balance payment. I will provide a price before invoicing.
-
I give a 100% satisfaction guarantee on all portrait commissions.
I gladly accept returns and cancellations. Please contact me if you have any problems with your portrait.
Portrait Pricing
All pricing is for single-subject works. If you are interested in a group portrait, please contact me so that I can review with you the reference photos and create mock-ups with size and price options.
